1000/2000 Series Allison Transmission PTO Gear Check
Planning a PTO Conversion?
If you’re planning a PTO conversion on your Allison transmission, the first step is figuring out if there’s a PTO gear behind the cover. Not every Allison 1000/2000 series transmission comes equipped with one, and knowing before you start will save you time, money, and frustration.
At Reaction Force, we’ve done hundreds of PTO conversions, and one of the most common questions we get is: “How do I know if my transmission actually has a PTO gear?”
Here’s a straightforward way to check:
Step 1: Find the PTO Cover
Look on the side of your transmission for a round or rectangular plate, usually bolted on with 6–8 bolts. This is the PTO cover. Depending on your model, you might have one on each side.
Step 2: Remove the PTO Cover
Before removing anything, make sure the truck is secure, parked safely, and that you’re ready for a little fluid loss (a drain pan helps here). Once you’ve got the cover off, you’ll have a direct view inside.
Step 3: Look for the Gear
Here’s the key:
- If you see a machined gear right inside the opening → your transmission is PTO-ready.
- If you only see a smooth housing with no gear teeth → there is no PTO gear installed.
That gear is what drives the PTO unit, so without it, a conversion isn’t possible unless you install the proper parts.
Step 4: Confirm Model & Build Info
Different Allison models and build assemblies can come with or without a PTO gear. Checking your transmission’s ID tag can confirm if it *should* have one, but nothing beats physically looking under the cover.
Why It Matters for PTO Conversions
Installing a PTO without a gear is like bolting a driveshaft to thin air — nothing’s going to turn. By verifying what’s inside, you’ll know right away if your unit is conversion-ready or if it’ll need additional work.
